Short & Long Distance The Man & The Stag Games

Playing a Short or Long Distance Version of The Man and The Stag

A few people have asked how to play a short version of The Man and The Stag. Well, it's very simple! Simply cut the number of cards in half, rounding up if uneven, for each phase. So for the first phase, you would use a quarter deck instead of a half deck, counting by dealing out in four piles. For the royal deck, you'd deal out in two piles and choose one. To reach the end of the phase, instead of going for two kings, either go for two kings or the end of the deck, whichever comes first. When you have an uneven number of cards, split into two piles and choose the one the odd card lands on. This will shorten play simply and without any further rule modification!

For long distance, you can easily use Roll20 or something like Google Slides & Docs to manage the timeline, map, and world characters. I'm interested in making a Roll20 custom pack but you can only upload those permanently if a Roll20 member, and I'm not a paying member, so this is a future goal. Help me reach that goal! As far as the playing cards, since you only share the deck at the end, each player can use a playing card deck on their side and split it to use the colors that their character uses (black for the Stag, red for the Man). At the end of the game, during the Closing, each player should shuffle their played cards and choose half of the cards for the Closing out of their deck, resulting in an equal number of red and black cards pulled for the Closing. Roll20 also has playing card decks, but I am not sure how flexible they are.

I hope this is helpful! I will integrate these into the rules should we hit a larger goal, but I wanted to make them available for those who backed to encourage playing.
